Restoring Facial Volume with Dermal Fillers

Cosmetic dermal fillers, or injectable facial fillers, are soft tissue substances injected into the skin at various depths to provide facial volume and help fill in facial wrinkles. They are also used to augment facial features, providing or restoring a smoother facial appearance. Most dermal fillers are temporary because, after some time, they are eventually absorbed by the body. Many visible signs of aging can be traced back to volume loss.
As we get older, our facial tissues thin out, lines become etched around the nose and mouth, and cheeks look a little hollow. Dermal fillers can effectively replace lost volume to help smooth wrinkles, plump the lips, and restore a more youthful appearance. The effect lasts for about six months or longer. Successful results depend on the health of the skin, the skill of the healthcare provider, and the type of filler used.

Types of Dermal Fillers Used

There are non-permanent dermal fillers as well as permanent injectable dermal fillers. In our Elite Med Spa, we use only non-permanent dermal fillers. The dermal fillers we refer to here are all composed of the same substance, which occurs naturally in your body. The second layer of the skin (dermis), which lies just below the outer layer (epidermis), is mostly made up of collagen—a supportive network of fibers that enables the growth of cells and blood vessels. Scientists have managed to use this collagen as a filler to soften the signs of aging, add volume to the face, and fill in scars.
The collagen may come from humans or animals, and results can last for up to four months. There are a variety of FDA-approved cosmetic dermal filler products, most of them made with Hyaluronic Acid (HA). HA is a commonly used substance found in more than 30 dermal fillers. It occurs naturally in the human body and serves as a network for transferring nutrients from the blood to skin cells. HA is present at high concentrations in soft connective tissue and is also found in the fluid that surrounds the eye, some cartilage, and fluid in the joints.
